Purpose/Usage
Licorice is one of the most popular and widely consumed herbs in the world. Although many know this herb for its flavouring in candy, licorice contains many health benefits. Ancient cultures on every continent have used licorice, the first recorded use by the Egyptians in the 3rd century BC. Glycyrrhizin, the main constituent found in licorice root, supports adrenal cortex function and its production of steroidal hormones. These adrenal tonic benefits make licorice a great choice for the maintenance of emotional, adrenal and inflammatory balance during times of great stress.
Precautions
Due to the adrenocortical effects licorice may cause sodium accumulation leading to fluid retention, oedema, low potassium levels and elevated blood pressure. For this reason it is not recommended in conjunction with steroidal or diuretic medications or during hypertension, kidney insufficiency, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver or hypokalaemia (low potassium). Not recommended for long-term use. Do not use during pregnancy or lactation.
