Ingredients
Novalac Anti-Colic has reduced lactose levels, much of the lactose being replaced with easily digestible carbohydrates to reduce discomfort from gas production.
Purpose/Usage The effects of colic
Babies with colic cry excessively and appear to be in pain. They may pull their legs up to the stomach, become red in the face, clench their hands, pass wind, and refuse to eat or become fussy after eating.
They may find it difficult to fall and stay asleep.
Incidence of colic may be as high as a quarter of all infants. Colic can be exhausting and create stress and anxiety for families.
Colic can often be related to poor absorption of carbohydrates, in particular lactose. Lactose is normally hydrolysed into glucose and galactose which are readily absorbed.
However if there is a physiological lactase deficiency, significant lactose will pass through the intestine undigested. Excess lactose is fermented in the colon, leading to the production of gas and abdominal pain.
Parents can take steps to help calm babies, such as frequent burping and not overfeeding, however a formula low in lactose can also help.
How Novalac Anti-Colic helps
In Novalac Anti-Colic formula, a significant proportion of the lactose is replaced with easily digestible carbohydrates to reduce wind and abdominal pain.
The level of lactose is designed to meet the infant's absorption capacity, while leaving little or no excess to be fermented in the colon.
The reduced level of lactose is sufficient for normal mineral absorption and healthy intestinal flora.
Novalac Anti-Colic is nutritionally complete and can be used even when colic has resolved.
