Fibre can be defined as a group of diverse compounds that are not broken down in the gastrointestinal tract by digestive enzymes. They are usually derived from seeds, grains, legumes, fruits, plants or plant cell walls and contain substances such as lignans and complex carbohydrates.
Usually fibre is classified into two different types; soluble fibre and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre undergoes fermentation in the gut and yields end-products that have a vast array of health benefits. Insoluble fibre has water-attracting properties that help soften and increase stool bulk and support healthy elimination. Plant foods generally contain both types of fibre in varying quantities depending on the plant’s characteristics. For example, acacia gum and guar gum are predominately composed of soluble fibre whereas psyllium husks, linseed and prunes contain a more even combination of soluble and insoluble fibre.
The fermentation of soluble fibre by gut bacteria leads to the formation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA’s). The intestinal mucosa utilises SCFA’s, or they can be absorbed into the circulatory system. Butyrate is a key SCFA that has a number of beneficial actions in the body, most of which speak to the many health benefits of fibre. These include support for normal blood glucose levels, cholesterol synthesis in the liver, colonic pH and the balance of beneficial bacteria. 2
According to the American Dietetic Association, daily fibre intake should be in the vicinity of 20-35g for healthy adults. For children calculate their age + 5g = daily amount.1 Given the high amount of refined foods in the modern diet, most people fail to reach this quantity each day. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 30% of New Zealanders suffer from chronic constipation which is often caused by insufficient fibre. Taking Clinicians ™ FibreCare Plus daily is an easy, cost effective way to ensure optimal fibre intake and to support normal, healthy digestive and bowel function.
