What happens in an allergic reaction?
An allergic reaction happens when your body's immune system mistakes a normally harmless substance for a dangerous invader, such as a virus. To fight the apparant threat, your immune system releases a range of chemicals, including one called histamine.

Your body may produce histamine in response to contact with any number of substances. The most common allergen is pollen, which can come from weeds, trees, flowers or grass. Other allergens carried by the air include animal dander, mould and household dust. Some allergens may also be ingested such as drugs like penicillin, or foods such as peanuts, wheat, milk, eggs, soy, nuts, fish and shellfish.

What are the symptoms of an allergic reaction in the eyes or nose?
An allergic reaction in the eyes usually involves itchy, watery eyes, accompanied by redness and sometimes swelling. An allergic reaction in the nose usually means sneezing, congestion, itching and a runny nose. The best way to prevent allergy symptoms is to avoid what triggers your allergy, however this is not always possible.

Some tips for avoiding allergy triggers
If you are allergic to pollen try and avoid going out on windy days, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, and shower and bathe your eyes frequently.

If you are allergic to house dust mites there are a range of options. From washing bedding above 55 C to dust mite barrier bedding covers or treated materials, including carpets, which inhibit dust mites and moulds.

If you are unsure of what you're allergic to, keep a diary of places you go and things you eat, in order for you to find a pattern to your allergy symptoms.
