Penciclovir
Purpose/Usage
This is used for treating Cold sores (herpes simplex virus).
Penciclovir is an antiviral medicine which is used to treat certain viral infections. It acts by preventing the production of viral genetic material (DNA), which is required for the reproduction and survival of the virus.
Penciclovir itself does not kill the virus, but by stopping it from reproducing, the virus is present in lower numbers. The lower numbers mean that the body's immune system can more easily overcome the virus.
Penciclovir is most commonly used to treat herpes simplex viral infections. This preparation should only be used to treat herpes simplex infections of the lips, a condition which is commonly known as a cold sore. Treatment should be started as early as possible after the first sign of an infection (tingling sensation) and continued for 4 days.
