Ketoconazole is an antifungal which belongs to a class of drugs known as the imidazoles. Ketoconazole inhibits the production of a chemical called ergosterol, which is a component of the fungal cell membrane. Damage to this membrane cannot be repaired and this interferes with the fungal cell's ability to reproduce, hence the infection is controlled. Ketoconazole when applied topically, is used in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin and genitals.
