Head lice (scientifically known as Pediculosis capitis) are tiny parasitic insects that live on the scalp of humans. They lay their eggs (known as nits) on the shafts of hair close to the skin surface; where the temperature is just right for them to hatch. Nits (yellow/white in colour) may appear like dandruff but cannot be flicked off as easily, because they stick to the hair firmly.

Each female louse can lay up to 100 nits. It takes about 7-10 days for a nit to hatch. Head lice can live for about 30 days on the human scalp.

Although a recurring problem among children, especially girls (ages 3-12), head lice do not spread disease. These annoying insects live very close to the scalp and depend on human blood to survive. They can affect almost anyone and have nothing to do with personal hygiene.

Head lice are contagious and spread through direct contact (from person to person). Lice infestations are common in places like kindergartens, day care centres and schools.

How do you know if your child has head lice?

Head lice tips:
