Nicorette is a Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) product. It gives your body the amount of nicotine it needs, to cope with withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

HOW DO THE NICORETTE PATCHES WORK?

The nicotine in the patches (which is much lower than the amount found in cigarettes) is absorbed by the skin and transported to your bloodstream.

By providing your body with controlled quantities of nicotine, Nicorette patches help you to gradually overcome the addiction.

These patches help you cope with withdrawal symptoms (restlessness, severe nicotine cravings, depression, anxiety etc) that you may experience as the level of nicotine in your body drops.

WHICH NICORETTE PATCH TO USE AND FOR HOW LONG?

• There are three different strengths available. The patch is applied on waking (usually in the morning) and removed 16 hours later (usually at bedtime). It should not be worn while you are sleeping.
• Begin your NRT with the most potent Nicorette Patch. This is the 15mg/16hr Nicorette Patch. You should use this patch daily for 8 weeks.
• Then, gradually switch over to a lower strength patch. Use a 10mg/16hr patch, daily for 2 weeks.
• Then use the least potent patch (5mg/16hr) everyday, for two weeks.
• This gradual reduction in the amount of nicotine will help your body get used to going without nicotine.

Use a combination of Nicorette Patches and Gum

Normally Nicorette Patch or Gum alone would provide enough nicotine to help you control your cravings. However, some people may find that even though they are using a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) they still have intense or frequent cravings they find difficult to cope with. If you are one of these people you may benefit from combining Nicorette Patch use with Nicorette Gum.

• Each morning apply a Nicorette 15mg/16 hour Patch to an intact area of skin. The Nicorette Patch should be removed before going to bed. After applying the Nicorette Patch use Nicorette 2mg Gum whenever a craving occurs.
• For best results try to chew at least 4 pieces of Nicorette Gum every day. Most people will use 5-6 pieces. Do not use more than 24 pieces of gum.

The combination of Nicorette Patch and Nicorette Gum should be used for 6-12 weeks. After this time, if required you can gradually stop using NRT products (as described below):

1. Use the Nicorette 10mg/16 hour patch for 3-6 weeks and then use the Nicorette 5mg/16 hour patch for 3-6 weeks while using the same number of pieces of Nicorette Gum in a day that you have routinely used. Then when a patch is no longer needed, gradually reduce the number of pieces of gum until you no longer need them. OR
2. Stop use of the Nicorette 15mg/16 hour Patch and then gradually reduce the number of pieces of Nicorette 2mg Gum that are used until you no longer need them.
